Algebra

Angela made the trip by bus in 14 hours and the return trip by car in 8 hours. If the bus traveled 30 miles per
hour slower than the car, how far was the trip?

Re: Algebra

Distance = rate x time
d = rt

Bus
d = d
rate = r
time = 14   {bus took 14 hours}
d = 14r   {distance = rate x time}

Car
d = d
rate = r + 30   {bus was 30 mph slower than car}
time = 8  {car took 8 hours}
d = 8(r + 30)   {distance = rate x time}

14r = 8(r + 30)   {set distances equal to each other, since they traveled the same distance}
14r = 8r + 240   {used distributive property}
6r = 240   {subtracted 8r from each side}
r = 40   {divided each side by 6}

d = 14r   {distance equation for bus}
= 14(40)   {substituted 40, in for r, into 14r}
= 560   {multiplied}

distance was 560 miles
