Gallons and mixture

 A dairy needs to 204 gallons of milk and containing 5% butterfat. How many gallons each of milk containing 6% butterfat and milk containing 3% butterfat must be used to obtain the desired 204 gallons ?

x = gallons of 6%
204 - x = gallons of 3%   {they need 204 total gallons}

0.06x + 0.03(204 - x) = 0.05(204)   {percent times gallons equals total mixture}
0.06x + 6.12 - 0.03x = 10.2   {used distributive property and multiplied}
0.03x + 6.12 = 10.2   {combined like terms}
0.03x = 4.08   {subtracted 6.12 from each side}
x = 136   {divided each side by 0.03}
204 - x = 68   {substituted 136, in for x, into 204 - x}

136 gallons of 6%
68 gallons of 3%
