If the ratio of the no: of people to the amount of money collacted(in $) for admission was 7:8, what fration of the people were adults? Question 2.There were a total of 494 apples and mangoes at a fruit stall. 4/7 of the no: of apples was 240 more than 3/4 of the number of mangoes. How many apples were there at the fruit stall?

Re: Word Problem -Ratio

Assume all are children:
7u x 0.5 = 3.5u
8u – 3.5u = 4.5u
2 – 0.50 = 1.50
4.5u/1.5 = 3u(adults)

Assume all are adults
7u x 2 = 14u
14u – 8u = 6u
2 – 0.50 = 1.50
6u/1.50 = 4u (children)
7u – 4u = 3u (adults)

As 7u is the total number of people,
the fraction of people that were adults = 3/7

-----------------------------------------

a = # of apples
494 - a = # of mangoes

(4/7)a = (3/4)(494 - a) + 240   ← 4/7 of # of apples was 240 more than 3/4 # of mangoes
16a = 21(494 - a) + 6720   ← multiplied by 28
16a = 10374 - 21a + 6720   ← distributed
16a = 17094 - 21a   ← combined
37a = 17094    ← added 21a
a = 462     ← divided
