Bethany is working her way through school.  She works two part-time jobs for a total of 22 hours a week.  Job A pays $6.10 per hour, and Job B pays $6.80 per hour.  How many hours did she work at each job the week that she made $144

x = number of hours at one job
y = number of hours at other job

x + y = 22   {TIME}
6.10x + 6.80y = 144   {PAY}

-6.10x - 6.10y = -134.2   {multiplied top equation by -6.10 to eliminate the x when added}
 6.10x + 6.80y = 144   {bottom equation stays the same}
---------------------------
            0.7y = 9.8   {added the two equations}
                 y = 14   {divided each side by 0.7}

x + y = 22   {top equation}
x + 14 = 22   {substituted 14, in for x, into top equation}
x = 8   {subtracted 14 from each side}

8 hours at the $6.10 per hour job
14 hour at the $6.80 per hour job
