MATH
The square of one number is 23 less than the square of a second number. If the second number is 1 more than the first, what are the two numbers?
If x represents the smaller number, then which of the following quadratic equations represents the word problem?
x² + 23 = x² + 2x + 1
(x + 23)² = x² + 2x + 1
x² + 23 = x² + 1

Re: MATH
x is the smaller number
x + 1 is the second number {the second is one more than the first}
x² + 23 = (x + 1)² {the square of one is 23 less than square of other}
x² + 23 = x² + 2x + 1
{squared the binomial on right side}
