Math

Tacitus made the first part of his journey in the chariot at 8 km/h and walk the rest of the way at 4 km/h. The total distance was 48 km and the total time was 7 hours how far did Tacitus walk and how far did he drive?

t = time spent in chariot
7 - t = time spent walking

8t + 4(7 - t) = 48  
8t + 28 - 4t = 48
4t = 20
t = 5 hours in chariot

7 - t
= 7 - 5
= 2 hours walking

Driving distance
= 8(5)   8km/hr for 5 hours
= 40 km

Walking distance
= 4(2)
= 8 km

40 km driving and 8 km walking
