Write 2 different expressions to find the total cost of an item that costs $a if the sales tax is 6%.

1.) You are either adding 6% of the item’s cost onto the sticker price,
or
2.) Finding 106% of the cost of the item


Say it costs $10

1.)  $10
   x 0.06     {finding 6% of the item’s cost}
—————-
      $0.60 in tax {changed 6% to decimal and multiplied to get the amount of tax}

10 + 0.60 = $10.60  {added the tax onto the item cost}

An expression for that would be
a + 0.06a if the item costs $a

2.)  $10 x 1.06  {finding 106% of the cost of the item}
       = $10.60 with tax {multiplied by 106% to find the total cost including tax}

An expression for that would be
1.06a if the item costs $a
